PATIENT ADVOCACY GroUPS
Patient advocacy is concerned with advocacy for patients, survivors, and carers. The patient advocate may be an individual or an organisation, often, though not always, concerned with one specific group of disorders. Advocacy is an activity by an individual or group which aims to influence decisions within political, economic, and social systems and institutions.

United in Compassion (UIC)
High-profile and extremely active in patient advocacy, Lucy Haslam’s motivation is summed up in the ABC’s Australian Story documentary: Doing it for Dan. See our detailed review for more info or visit their website

UNITED IN COMPASSION | |
Organisation | United in Compassion |
Website | https://www.unitedincompassion.com.au/ |
Audience/Who’s it for? | United in Compassion is primarily a patient advocacy group, which advocates for, “access to Full Spectrum herbal Medicinal Cannabis extracts and dried herb Cannabis”. |
Location | New South Wales, Australia |
Mission | “Our primary mission is advocating for patient access to Full Spectrum herbal medicinal Cannabis extracts and dried herb Cannabis; in a manner which is safe, effective, affordable, equitable and favourable for patients, for the dignified relief of suffering.” |
Founders/Who’s behind it | At just 20 years old, Lucy Haslam’s son Dan was diagnosed with bowel cancer. In an effort to fight the ravaging effects of his treatments, Dan turned to medical cannabis sourced on the black market. Although it was too late for Dan, who passed away in 2015 aged 25, Haslam founded United in Compassion to advocate for law reform and patient access. Gaining 250,000 signatures from their change.org petition, Haslam’s push for law reform has attracted the attention and backing of several high-profile patrons, including Australian politicians and celebrities such as Mike Baird and Olivia Newton John. |
Community activity | In addition to ongoing educational and fundraising events, which you can find on their Facebook page, United in Compassion’s major annual event is the Medicinal Cannabis Symposium with keynote speakers and panelists drawn from the who’s who of the Australian and international medical-cannabis industries. You can also become a member and make a donation here to support their mission of access to medicinal cannabis for everyone who needs it. |
Cool features/useful links | One of the most valuable features of this page is free access to videos of all of the keynote speakers from the Medicinal Cannabis Symposiums. Find the 2017 videos here.
There are lots of other great educational links on their website here, including several documentaries. The ABC’s Doing it for Dan Australian Story documentary highlights the emotional and personal story of Dan’s fight, and why the Haslams now do what they do. |
Ease of use/review | If you have ever wondered what you would do if you or your loved ones needed urgent access to medical cannabis, then the Haslam’s story may be just the reason you need to get behind the issue of medical cannabis reform in Australia. |

Website | http://www.mcuainc.org.au/ |
Audience/Who’s it for? | Anyone who will ever need affordable access to medical cannabis should be interested in the work of this grass-roots, law-reform focused organisation. |
Location | Queensland, Australia |
Mission | MCUA’s mission is clearly one of law reform through education and lobbying: “We ultimately seek cannabis law reform throughout Australia and our activities are focused on lobbying Australian governments at all levels and all sides of politics”. |
Founders/Who’s behind it | Perhaps more famously known as the Canna Nannas—and with their own very personal stories driving them to tirelessly crusade for law reform— Deb Lynch and Gail Hester are the driving force behind MCUA. |
Community activity | With nearly 17,000 members, the associated Facebook group is very active. You can become a member of the MCUA for just $5, and throw your support behind medical-cannabis law reform. |
Cool features/useful links | Probably the best thing about this website is the voice this organisation gives to thousands of ordinary people. Check out the patient stories section here. |
Ease of use/review | Whilst not the slickest looking site, what is lacks in Gucci it gains in the passion of the founders and their followers to seek real and practical law reform in relation to medical cannabis in Australia. People power at its finest. |

LAW REFORM
Attempts at medicinal cannabis law reform in Australia are not new. However, in historical perspective 2015 and 2016 will be seen as the time when community debate about legalisation of medicinal cannabis reached a tipping point in a number of Australian jurisdictions and when community impetus for change resulted in major reform initiatives.
On 17 October 2015, the Federal Government announced that it would legalise the growing of cannabis for medicinal and scientific purposes. On 24 February 2016, the Australian parliament made amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act that legalised the growing of cannabis for medicinal and scientific purposes. Subsequently, the usage of medicinal cannabis was legalised at the federal level on 1 November 2016 – as of November 2016, medicinal cannabis can be prescribed in New South Wales and Western Australia, with all other states and territories except South Australia and the Northern Territory to follow in 2017.
On 17 February 2017, The Office of Drug Control in the Federal Department of Health issued the very first Cannabis Research licence under the medicinal cannabis provisions of the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967.

Audience/Who’s it for? | This site is for health professionals and patients, with an emphasis on promoting greater awareness and acceptance amongst doctors through education and science. |
Location | New South Wales, Australia |
Mission | Dr Towpik’s aim is to, “provide a non-biased source of education designed to equip health professionals and patients with a thorough understanding of cannabis science while aiming to remove the negative stigma of the past.” |
Founders/Who’s behind it | Medihuanna was founded by former medical-cannabis sceptic turned proponent, Dr Teresa Towpik. “We believe that through education will come acceptance of cannabis as a respected medicine.”
Dr Towpik—who works in general practice in the Blue Mountains, NSW—has this to say about the heavy bias towards evidence-based medicine, “We need balance and we need to listen to patients as well.” |
Community activity | As a political lobbyist, Dr Towpik really gets down to business in her 2018 letter to Federal Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, stating her support for over-the-counter access to any strength of CBD and 1% THC products, as well as legalised home-growing up to five plants.
“The government should stop controlling health professionals and focus on ensuring that high quality medicinal cannabis is consistently delivered.” Read the full letter here. You can also see Dr Towpik speak at various events, usually posted on the MediHuanna Facebook page. |
Cool features/useful links | For $59.95 anyone can register for Dr Towpik’s e-learning course—MC 101 Introduction to Medical Cannabis for Health Professionals and Patients— and learn some fairly thorough basic foundations.
